It's a critique on the domesticated woman in society. Her stabbing the man at the end is her lashing out in men in general. The fact that men have forced women into this demeaning societal role deserves retribution (in Chantal Akerman's view at least...)
There are bigger things going on here than a plot about a missing button..

As a young film buff I had read so many articles about this film, and I've even gotten my hands on as many Chantal Akerman films as possible, but I still have never seen this entire film!
