I think the important thing to keep in mind while watching this scene is that Jeanne Dielman runs 3 hours 15 minutes.

  • It's a critique on the domesticated woman in society. Her stabbing the man at the end is her lashing out in men in general. The fact that men have forced women into this demeaning societal role deserves retribution (in Chantal Akerman's view at least...)

    There are bigger things going on here than a plot about a missing button..
