Mahendra Kapoor was born in Amritsar on January 9, 1934 but soon moved to Mumbai. He trained under many well known classical singers like Pt.Hussanlal, Pt. Shantaram's Navrang in 1958, singing Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi, under the musical direction of C. Ramchandra, and the song became an all time hit.

Some of his notasble renditions are to be found in Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Waqt, Hamraaz, Dhund Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim among many others. He received the best singer award for "Neele gagan ke tale" from Hamraaz in 1967. His voice particularly suited Sunil Dutt, for whom he rendered many memorable hits.

He has lent his voice to almost the entire pantheon of heroes of the Hindi film industry, like Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajendra Kumar and Vinod Khanna among other notables.

He recorded the all time hit album M3 with Mussarat from Pakistan accompanying him in the female leads. The M3 album incorporated the Hindi renditions of the great Boney M hits, like Daddy Cool.

This great singer passed away on September 27, 2008 following a heart attack. He leaves behind his wife, three daughters and a son; and thousands of memorable songs, which have made a niche for themselves in every Hindi film music lover's heart.
