Latino Leaders Luncheon with Senator Mel Martinez (March 5, 2008)

Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL), the first Cuban-American to serve in the United States Senate gave the keynote address at the Latino Leaders Luncheon™ on March 5, 2008.

Senator Martinez was elected as Senator for Florida in 2005 and is also the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George W. Bush. Martinez graduated from Florida State University College of Law in 1973. During his 25 years of law practice in Orlando, he was actively involved in community activities. Martinez arrived in the United States from Cuba in 1962 fleeing the Communist dictatorship. He was one of over 14,000 Cuban children in Operation Pedro Pan, a Catholic humanitarian effort that helped bring Cuban children to freedom.

The Senator was introduced by Octavio Hinojosa-Mier, the executive director of Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute. Other speakers included Reverend Charles Kelley of the U.S. Conference of Jesuits, Emilio Gonzalez of Verizon Communications, Aurelio Ruelas of Anheuser-Busch, Yanira Cruz, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Council on Aging, and Mickey Ibarra, Latino Leaders Network fouder and Chairman.
