a close look at the work in progress composed of ebonized ash (used to make baseball bats & a member of the olive family) & ebonized Koa (type of acacia indigenous to hawaii) music playing- "don't know why" by: Norah Jones
Yes I did. (followed the grain of the wood) I used the corner of a file to gouge the winter rings. The ebonizer is simple. I pulled apart 1000 grade steel wool. Put it (without bunching it back up) into a spray bottle. Then pour distilled white vinegar into the bottle. 24 hours later, voilà, ebonizer. The same solution was used on the entire piece. Ash tends to turn green. The rough gouged areas retain more solution thus turn much darker. The Koa legs and frame turn almost black.
Well, that's something I hadn't thought of till after the fact (still experimenting at this stage.) does the vinegar order go away with the final finish??? The answer is yes, the finish takes care of the smell. However, it's important to apply finish after the piece has had time to completely dry on a not so humid day. (Setting it out in the sun helps) Also if you sand before hand, wear a mask, the dust can give you a sore throat. Bad enough to where it's the kind of thing that happens once.
wow, did you just follow the grain of the wood? what did you use to ebonize the legs?
