Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults under the age of 74 in the United States. Historically thought of as an adult disease, diabetes affects children too. Poor diet and a lack of exercise put children at risk. Often optometrists detect it first through routine eye exams. As part of National Diabetes Month, Dr. Kimberly Friedman of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians appears on CN8s Your Morning to remind us of the importance of having regular comprehensive eye exams.
See your optometrists when...
Vision becomes blurry
Have trouble reading
See double images
Feel pressure in your eye
See spots or floaters
Straight lines appear crooked
Peripheral vision becomes limited
Your eyes get red and stay that way
Yes, high blood sugar does affect eyesight. Blood vessels on the back of the eye can be damaged and lead to loss of vision. This is due to blood not being able to flow freely (due to glucose in blood vessels). Blocked vessels are also a danger to the heart and damage to the heart is another complication of diabetes.
