Robert Young followed up on his success from "Father Knows Best" with the show about everyone's favorite primary care physician - Marcus Welby, MD. Co-starring with him is a young James Brolin, aka Mr. Barbra Streisand and Josh's dad - long before he moved into "Hotel" on TV.

  • The '60's and '70's was such a great era for T.V. and I'm grateful to have grown up through it. There was just so much variety and quality then, we didn't think it was special - we couldn't envision it otherwise! Looking back on it now and comparing it with today's muck is pretty startling. You really need to have lived through that time to appreciate just how low television entertainment has fallen.

  • @kovik62 : Very well put. Thanks for contributing to the thread!

  • Loved him in Father Knows Best and Marcus Welby. Both great shows IMO. I don't like or watch any tv shows these days. I watched and loved SO many back in those days.

  • @ladybluluv: I hear you, sister. Most of what passes for entertainment nowadays is dreck. I shudder to think what CBS is going to do when they remake "Hawaii Five-O" this fall. I bet it will be as bad as the remake of "Bionic Woman."

  • I cannot help but point out that James Brolin didn't know squat about riding a bike properly. One never takes his foot off of the brake -- his right foot -- even when slowing to a stop. When he stopped in this short scene, he was stopping using only the hand/front brake. Not smart.

  • Well, nobody has ever accused actors of being the smartest people in the room.

I grew up during the 70s and remember watching a lot of these shows. However I do remember vividly that they would also programs from the 50s and 60s.

We didn't have a kids channel so everyone grew up on those old shows. Having kids of my own I was shocked that they had no idea what a cement pond was, never head of the Sanford n Son and had no idea about Gilligans Island. Not until I showed them.

If you have kids sit with them and watch a few shows they will appreciate it.

  • @FylthyBeest Brolin is riding a vintage Triumph. The brake is on the left side on that bike.

  • Can someone give me a brief synopsis of what this tv programme was about?

  • @8283doc It may interest you to know that this year marks the 50th anniversary of two medical drama chestnuts--Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey, and I want them on DVD. If you do, raise your hand.

  • @Juliaflo AMEN!!! The show was on when the whole family could watch. Back then a show like this could entertain as well as educate. Not like the crap that's on now. That's why I prefer mainly the retro shows.

  • Welby... Marcus Welby, MD. He will... cure ye, Welby. Welby, he cures so neatly, he treats so sweetly, indeed... Well, I'll be! Welby, Marcus MD... And Steve Ki-ley... Toooooo! (Tuning us in from your own living room TV Set... Universal Studios Inc!)
