I recently gained a lot of work experience at a local CGI studio, learning how to use 3ds Max and Vray. Here we see one of the company's scenes; my task was to port it to Source. As well as porting the (optimized) models, I also baked their textures and lighting. The floor is a covered by a func_reflective_glass entity.
If anyone wants more information, feel free to ask and I'll update the description!

  • That isn't vray. It's just realy high quallity cubemaps and pre-rendered scene effects. This video is fake.

  • @FOGoticus The lighting and textures were baked to UVs using Vray, then the scene was imported as models into Source with the textures superimposed. You are right about there being no real-time Vray element, though.

Holy shit, This kind of stuff would make the quality of maps for source games, raise to the highest level. Could you at the very least, write the steps to do this? And can this process be used for other engines, like Unreal and Unity?

  • @AkacopmanX Unreal and Unity are much better suited for this kind of technique than Source is. Take a look through the comments, I wrote down the method earlier on.

  • @Tobiasz931 This is in the Source engine.

As for CryEngine3, I know it does and also has the same graphical quality as Frostbite 2, but the developer workflow and lighting optimisation in Frostbite 2 is the best I've seen (and rendered) so far.

  • This is half life 3 :p

  • Unity 3d

  • So does this use any hammer lights at all? or are the textures self illuminated?

  • holy crap, this is better quality than any actual valve game.

  • @unbrokenjack Well, I kinda agree with you now, the lighting and shading did make it far better looking, but nonetheless, with mods; source, even though DirectX 9 could look as good as engines that use DirectX 11 like frostbite 1.5 or 2.

Take the latest cinematic mod for HL2 for example.

  • @unbrokenjack Exactly. Because source engine isn't capable of such rendering power, even tho it's said it can do advanced ray tracing(prolly a mith as well).

  • @superme9000 This is 2009, however I personally think the improvements in terms of phong shading and other such lighting and shader tweaks make Source 2011 a much better-looking engine.

  • @TheMightnight Could be, but to be honest there wasn't a huge update to the actual graphics from the legacy 2004 version.
