This is the recording that give me the most, of the many Mendelsson here on YouTube. Mendelssohn is magic to me, and I do not like musicians "being at work", if you understand. This guy is not. And I love it. I gave it top rating.
I noticed that Mintz has a really slow bow speed. It doesn't vary much at all, and in fast passages he just uses less bow to compensate. It's quite interesting, because his bow almost sticks to the violin; it never floats. I'm almost annoyed because you can't see his energy but you can definitely hear it.
JPizzle1490, you are so right. Mr. Shlomo Mintz shows character which can be distinguished just by closing your eyes. Can't say this of most of the present violinists although some of them are quite beautiful!
Shlomo Mintz is one of the only violinists from his generation who I really feel has his own distinctive sound. I mean, everyone has there own distinctive sound to an extent, but with the older generation (Milstein, Oitrakh, Szeryng etc.) it's easy to pick out who's who just from hearing the sound. I find that is not the case with violinists today. Mintz is an exception.
