Monet may have been one of the most consistent in the practice of style and philosophy of Impressionist painting, but he was never leader of the Impressionist movement. Gustave Courbet and Edwouard Manet (his successor) were considered by the impressionists themselves to be the leaders of their group, the avant-garde or radical painters.

That;s wrong Manet refused to join the impressionist's' movement and never took part in an impressonistic exhibition he only participated in the salon de paris which was ironic towards the impressionists and refused to comprehend any of their work.Manet is now considered as an mpressionist but he disguised that charachterization plus he is a processor not successor of Monet.Goustav Courbet was a realist and the only pure impressionists were Monet and Degas.
