In 1973, the Trojan Marching Band made its historic first trip to Notre Dame Stadium. In only his 4th year with The Spirit of Troy, director Dr. Arthur C. Bartner brought the entire band on a budget of $30,000. The Trojans' groundbreaking halftime show shocked the traditional Irish crowd with energetic renditions of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, "Will It Go Round in Circles" by Billy Preston, "Brother Louie" by Hot Chocolate, and "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group.

This year, the Trojan Marching Band will be making its 20th consecutive visit to Notre Dame Stadium. 38 years later, it costs nearly 8x as much to send the entire band.

Please consider giving to The Spirit of Troy to continue this great tradition. Visit http://www.uscband.com/travel for more information.

  • I am 65 years old now. Was in the band - the sousaphone on the left end. Went to college after serving in the US Navy - Vietnam Nam. Sure enjoyed it.

  • Money shot at 4:21.

  • We were blowing.

  • A friend of mine was a ND student at the time and he said that he and his college friends were mesmerized by the Song Girls and hearing a top 40 song played by a marching band.
