Kilcar is located in southwest Donegal overlooking the broad sweep of Donegal Bay and is known to be a centre of the hand-woven tweed industry, along with hand-embroidery, knitting, and other cottage industries which flourish in this area.
Hill walking is popular, and to cater for that, the Kilcar Way Walk allows one a choice of three different, but equally beautiful routes all starting in the village: - one loops around the western foothills of Mulnanaff - another runs east and north-east to Kilcar Forest - the third skirts around Tawny.
There are also remains of an ancient ring fort, a 'megalithic' tomb and the ruins of (the original) St Cartha's Church, built in the 7th century, from which the village derives it's name.
