Sobbing in the woods
by *Solomen
I'm not even sure what is real anymore. I haven't slept well in days. I keep hearing that thing. I'm not even sure why it let me live. By all rights it should have killed me that night. The police wouldn't take me seriously and the video I had taken was so garbled that its hard to tell exactly what was on it. They never did find John's body. A week ago my friend John and I were coming back from a party. The details are a bit fuzzy because honestly we had both been drinking. We had decided to take a shortcut along a wooded trail that led to the culdesac where we both lived. It was the worst mistake we had ever made.
We both heard a sniffle sound and came upon what looked like a young girl crying. Her back was to us so we couldn't see her face and if we had known what we had thought to be decorative hair clips were actually her ears John would probably still be alive. She appeared to be dressed in tattered rags that had been scrounged together or stolen from laundry baskets. From behind she simply looked like a vagrant girl down on her luck.
John, being the compassionate one, walked up to her to see what was the matter. I stayed back, and as a lark started filming. Hero John rescues homeless girl I thought to myself as he approached the huddled figure. As he got closer, trying not to scare the girl, a low thrumming sound started up. Both John and I wiped at trickles of blood that had begun leaking out of our noses. The thrum wasn't very loud but I could feel it in my chest. At about that time the camera started acting up. He put his clean hand on the girl's shoulder and she turned with an ear piercing shriek that stunned John in his tracks and caused me to trip backwards. It was then that I saw the monster's face, A single glaring eye flanked by six nostrils over a mouth that would impress a shark. It bit into John's neck before throwing him aside, the wound appeared to be almost instantly fatal. It then turned to me, making that same sobbing sound that had lured us in. I could see that it wasn't crying, it was smelling me. It mewled softly like a cat and started to stalk towards me. I could hear the thrum again as it got closer. Desperate I scrambled backwards, trying to get away from this thing that had so easily killed my friend. It leaped the remaining distance, pinning me to the ground. I could smell the scent of honey and fish from its skin, cloying in my nose. It was then that the thing noticed the heavy heirloom cross I wore around my neck. Terrified it jumped back, a creature that could kill so easily afraid of an iron bauble. It then shrieked again, louder than before and I passed out.
When I woke the creature and John were gone. The casing of my camera was scratched and after reviewing the garbled recording it appeared as if the thing had been tasting it. There was no clear image of its face and from the video all that could be surmised was that a crazy homeless girl had attacked us and for some reason had licked the camera after I had passed out. They blamed that and seeing her as a monster on me being drunk that night. It seems to have followed me home though. At night I can hear it sobbing. I know it isn't crying now. It has my scent and doesn't want to give up the hunt. There are streaks on my bedroom window where it licked the glass. I don't know why it hasn't killed me yet.
