Christian Wolff, if I recall correctly, wrote this piece for a concert on very short notice. He came up with a new way to make a score in which the notes that the musicians would play would depend on each other's playing. Wolff, on purpose, wrote in some motives to the piece that were impossible to solve, and another player had to make a random sound to get the piece going again.
