In this film researchers from the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Stockholm University talk about research within the field of biomembranes. Professor Gunnar von Heine explains the importance of this research: understanding the biology of cells, biomembranes and the proteins that sit in these biomembranes is central to learning more about how diseases occur. Researcher Jan Willem de Gier, who is working to understand membrane proteins, says that 70 percent of all drugs at present target membrane proteins. We also meet research student Ann-Louise Johansson, who is working to develop a picture of how proteins look at the molecular level. As Johansson explains, if the work done in the department can provide a deeper knowledge of biomembranes the pharmaceutical industry will have a firmer footing in its battle to develop more effective drugs to combat disease.
