檳城艷 was originally recorded by 芳艷芬 for the 1954 film "檳城艷"; although 芳艷芬 is famous for her Chinese Opera Performances (粵劇), 檳城艷 is actually considered "Pop Music"; the composer, 王粵生, who also wrote the lyrics, mainly worked with 粵曲, however, 檳城艷 is considered an early "fusion" or "crossover" of English and Chinese Opera composition. He also composed "懷舊", which was a sub-theme in the film "檳城艷". This popular Cantonese became well-known through out the 1960s and into the 1970s, being recorded by singers even in 2000s. Renditions include 鄭錦昌 in the 1970 album "不要拋棄我/無情火車有情人", 陳任 in the 1973 album "陳任歌集: 檳城艷", 鄧麗君 in the 1980 Cantonese album "勢不兩立", and 梅艷芳 in the 1998 album "變奏".
