This is Pompeii's House of the Cithara Player or Lyre Player (Region I, Insula 4). it's at the corner of what was, and still is, Pompeii's busiest crossroads where the main north-south and east-west roads meet. It was excavated in the mid-1800s and stripped of all its paintings and contents, leaving it a shadow of its former self and exposing it to steady deterioration. It's an extremely large house, built on separate levels and combined what had once been several different houses. By the time of the eruption in AD 79 75% of the insula was just one house. The film starts with the western entrance (no. 5) on the Via di Stabia and takes you through into what had once been three other houses to the east but which had been acquired by the Lyre Player house's owner. What's most noticeable is the resultant series of three peristyles.

I've revisited Pompeii several times in 2010 and 2011 since I shot this film and the house has been closed on every occasion. So, don't hold out your hopes if you want to get in.

  • This is my favourite house in Pompeii. Very beautiful. Unfurtunately, it is destroyed quite much, and all frescoes were moved to museum.
