This week (October 2011) scenes are being filmed on Vancouver Island in the city of Uculet. Russle Crow who is playing Superman's father was spotted on set along with Kevin Costner, Henry Cavill, And Oddly enough Tom Cruise.
I do not think Tom Cruise is acting in this movie, but is working as a Director or Producer for the film.
Either way I think it is pretty darn cool that they are filming right here on my Island. Perfect for film and TV production.

you have to hide in bushes to take pictures. security is nasty at most sites (except main street plano ummm smallville) (for now)
btw . . . tornado theory is right on. they had a jet engine blowing trees to simulate a tornado. I also heard about tornado simulation specialists being brought in.
