Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I would like to ask you how to set up amplifiers for different purposes. I use a Fender Stratocaster and an Epiphone hollow body electric guitar I use a Fender Deluxe 50 Watts all tube amp. I also have a Line 6 POD which I use for effects. Can you explain to me how to approach setting my amp bass, treble, middle, presence, master levels.

1). In order to get a clean bright jazzy sound like George Benson, or Wes Montgomery with my Epiphone?

2). To get a clean country style rhythm sound with my Stratocaster?

3). To get a distorted or overdrive sound for a guitar solo similar to; for example Foreigner, or David Gilmore?

4). Also would be interested in other sounds such as metal.
- Thanks,
David, Queens NY.

A: Pursuing sounds between; amps, guitars and effects units can be a long and often frustrating journey. And, just when you think you've got that perfect sound at home... You'll get to the gig and your amp could mysteriously sound terrible. In this video I will discuss various common settings for; Country, Jazz, Rock and Metal.

  • Amazing instructional video sir. I always thought the room had something to do with the sound...thanks for clearing my doubts. The thing with my amp is that no matter how you adjust it, the highs sound really crappy and digital. It's a line 6 spider IV; so, just to bring some variation I thought I'd go buy a pedal..and so I thought the Digitech Death Metal would be pretty good; well that one turned out to be worse. So, trading the shitty line 6 that I have for a Peavey....is that a good idea?

  • @assasinator1980, Hi, and thanks for leaving such a great comment! The thing I always suggest is to go with a real plain-jane analog amplifier, (80-100 watts). Then, add effects out-board. Whether that's a few Boss, or DigiTech, or Zoom pedal units, or maybe a pedal board, or perhaps a simple tube-based rack system... the results in-so-far as the sound (in the end) will generally greatly exceed that of any digital modelling amp. This is just in my own humble opinion - of course!

  • This is one of the most helpful and well-made videos on amp settings that I have watched. Thanks for answering a sh*tpile of questions and well done!!

  • @DarkChaoto Most people scoop the mids for Metal so you should be fine. If you did get a new amp the Peavey Valveking 212 is the bomb!!!

  • That Dirty Blues setting is spot on man. I use a Semi-Hollow and a Strat and that is how i use my amp. Great Video.

  • My amp only has Drive, Level, Treble and Bass. There's no Low, Mid or High setting so does that mean I can't get a heavy metal setting and need a new amp if I want to do so?

  • @creativeguitarstudio I hear what you're saying....should've done that in the first place...hopefully save up enough money for the rack system though. Thank you!

  • Can u pleassssssseeee gimme the tabs for the jazz thing you played!!!

  • @BraveMavrick Well the Special 130 is pretty much a Bandit but double the power amp, so it weighs more, then the amp gains about 10lbs with the EVM. Ouch.

  • @Geepsterr Your right, I had a bandit with a evm speaker and it was mind blowing!

  • @ggrassi68 It will be agreat amp when you put an Electrovoice EVM series 2 speaker in it . Get another one for an extension cab on bigger gigs or un miked ones . I used a PV Special 130 with that speaker opening summer 2010 Meatloaf tour and 2011 Ted Nugent. It did very admirably. A good speaker can make a good amp great .
