Question: It seems Asimo can only navigate in "problem solving" scenarios where it knows all the information at any given time. I arrive at this because it appears the top-down view shown in the video is actually what the robot is using to plan its movements. Is this correct? I wonder how far Asimo is from being able to solely use vision detection and cope with limited knowledge of surroundings.

Yep. But like RoboCup soccer, it is a good first step towards solving these kind of problems. Robots are able to build similar maps using just their stereoscopic vision.

probably because he knows this about the obstacles and because u cant determine height from the ceiling mounted camera. When Asimo uses his own sensors he will avoid all of the obstacle

Does anyone else notice that he steps OVER the corner of some of the paper? He doesn't walk completely around it. So what if this wasn't paper? What if it was a bookshelf or something? Their isn't any stepping over the corner of one those. I am guessing that it is a slight glitch or why wouldn't he just step over the paper in the middle instead of going 99% around it and then stepping over the corner of it? Either way its an awesome advancement. Almost time to call Will Smith to save us from him

I guess it would keep incrementing th size of the paths unless they placed a limit to it. Then they can program it to say: "I don't know how to get to the blue dot" if the paths become larger than, let's say, 20 meters.
