The question the movie poses is, would people be happier without responsibilities? The movie doesn't come right out and answer that question. Because Will and Marcus are so different in nature, but so similar in essence. Will has no responsibilities and Marcus has too many, yet; neither of them is truly happy. However at the end, the movie makes the final point, that no man is an island, part of being happy is interaction with people, and interaction with people comes with responsibility.
