Watch as renowned artist and sculptor, Richard R. Miller, takes you through his process of painting a posthumous portrait commission of two of this nations historical icons. A faded black and white snapshot, cluttered and poorly lit, depicts Henry Ford and Doctor George Washington Carver in conversation at Tuskegee University. This is the only reference available that could in some measure, show the relationship of these two gentlemen, their friendship and their mutual respect.
The painting, commissioned by Edsel Ford and the Ford Motor Company, was presented at the dedication ceremony of the new library at Tuskegee University.
Follow Richards painting technique and commentary as he describes in detail the problems of this particular painting. The drawing, the value and color composition, the under painting to describe composition, through the evolution of the work to the final details of the painting.
You are there to see how a portrait can become much more than the sum of its reference.
