  • The sound he gets out of the horn goes beyond Bird or Trane, to my ears.

  • sonny changed his sound alot, but yeah i agree his tone is my favorite. rollins, bird, and trane are all the shit though.

  • miles once said you can tell a good player from the way he holds his instrument-- it should be like a part of his body... the way rollins plays is like natural speech... the sense of expressive joy is, i feel, unique... other players reach for effects, but sonny is like-- speaking, singing, joking, expressing himself joyfully

  • @TheIsraDave well it sounds like you had the same incredible experience i had at a sonny rollins concert, in 1994 it was the first time i had seen him and noone i have ever seen before or since has made me feel the emotion he puts into his music, that is an amazing gift he has for transferring that energy and emotion to us with his music..i think about that night alot, his solo on don't stop the carnival was absolutely incredible..

  • @borregonian The greatest experience of my whole life was hearing Sonny's solo on Don't Stop the Carnival at Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts in the summer of 1983. I was beside myself...well, it can't be described.

  • @TheIsraDave Stop comparing and get happy

  • anyone know if this whole concert is available on dvd or somethin?

  • all i can tell you is that i went to the monterey jazz festival in 1994 and sonny came on last on sunday night around ten oclock and i was falling asleep, but when he came on he started with this calypso song and i was going crazy! after starting the tune and doing the first chorus and all that beginning stuff, he went on the most insane solo i've ever heard in my life, i was screaming, he kept going and going and going, i will never forget that night and that emotion he was blowing...awesome.

  • And Old family friend Walter Davis JR. on the keys!

  • This is a fantastic session, we wait for part 2 of Alfies theme.. There is no greater L- is insane from this consert.
