The "Ingemisco" and "Confutatis" from Verdi's Requiem. Frank Lopardo, Rene Pape. The Royal Albert Hall, 1997. This was a historic performance of the Requiem since it had been due to be conducted by Sir Georg Solti in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales who had died two weeks earlier. In the event Solti himself passed away on 5th September and Sir Colin Davis stepped in to dedicate the performance to both the Princess and Sir Georg....

  • don't you have any part of this requiem where Olga's singing please???

  • I'll be posting another clip with her quite soon....

  • What's the orchestra and chorus?

  • I have just amended the details of the performers and given more information about the circumstances surrounding the performance. Just click on "more" next to the viewing screen. Cheers.

  • Thanks for this great posting of a young Rene Pape! Do you have any more live performances of Rene?

  • Unfortunately, I don't think so. If I find any more I'll certainly try and post them for you....

  • If Caruso were alive today he couldn't even get into a young artist program. OVERDARKENING INDEED.

  • Honestly - So many tenors do this piece so much justice, Pavarotti does a phenomenal job because it's Pavarotti and his voice was so special.

Bjoerling is fantastic also, if we're speaking of technicians- he's phenomenal. Though I feel the medium of recording hinders his tone slightly at times.

Frank Lopardo is certainly an inspiration though some say he "overdarkens" or "weighs" his top. I'd disagree - he really negotiates the parts of his voice like another real technician.

    Bravi!

  • Was this performance ever made available commercially, either as DVD or CD?

  • Lopardo is a funny guy. Literally. I saw him in Italian Girl and Daughter. He's an excellent comic actor. I saw Florez last season in Daughter. Lopardo was much better if only because he's audible. He's very good here too. So is Pape.

  • Mr. Lopardo is a fantastic artist!!! Beauty of tone, nuance and requisit power. Beautiful. Ditto for Mr. Pape. I wish I could have heard this live. Why the Met does not use Mr. Lopardo any more, I cannot understand. He is an artist in the old tradition.

  • @dziady1: what Pavarotti did to you? Pavarotti is resting now in peace... you may do so now :)

  • Terrific tenor! I agree with those who compliment his technique -- easy movement throughout his range, great color, fantastic placement. And ringing high B flat.

  • Cool mullet on Pape. Billy Ray Cyrus would be proud. He can enter the competition with Thomas Hampson and Roberto Alagna for best hear (though I think that Samuel Ramey has them all beat for longevity)

  • @dziady1

    WHAT A DOUCHE COMMENT-

  • @dziady1 Well but Pavarotti was always in tune.....

  • Fantastic placement!!
