Elfman is better.

Your analysis discerning the "Heralding"/"Approaching theme{s} is insightful and intelligent . I would mention Revell's Score for :The Crow as one which combined both of these themes

Overall, I liked Batman Begins soundtrack better than The Dark Knight. But I think TDK is the better movie. There are some good bits in TDK soundtrack and I liked the last track on the CD the best. Then again, TDK is a darker film than Begins, so you have to expect a darker soundtrack.

great discussion on the differences of musical themes!

Elfman's stuff is better than the new things, even though they are very different. John Williams is the king of film scores, nobody beats him except possibly for Jerry Goldsmith. I liked the soundtrack to Batman Begins, and I don't know if TDK is better than that. Batman had his own theme in Begins, and he should have had one in TDK.

The Joker theme is very different from anything else that has been composed before.
