Police believe excessive speed played a role in an all-terrain vehicle accident Tuesday that led to death of a Mount Washington teen.

Matthew Mullins, 18, was pronounced dead at University Hospital 5:12 p.m. Tuesday, said Sam Weakley, a Jefferson County deputy coroner.

Mullins, who lived in the 2200 block of Flatlick Road, was riding his ATV on the rural street near his home when he lost control and struck a guide wire connected to a utility pole, said Mike Cook, chief deputy of the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told police Mullins was driving at a high rate of speed before hitting the wire.

Bullitt County EMS workers transported him to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

He died from blunt-force injuries to the neck, Weakley said.
