Measure the torque needed to unscrew a 91/30 barrel after 73 years

I did not want to make a relief cut, even though the barrel is to be thrown out.

I made a tapered collet from 1.5" 6061- T6 Alluminum.
The shank is 1.3 degrees taper on either side.

I made action wrenches like the drawing in MacFarland's gunsmithing book, for years.

Then I figured out that the bolts, the V on the top, and the flat on the bottom must be in the same plane.

Anyway, making action wrenches is easy, making a barrel vise that can do the above video is harder. I had to got to 7/8-14 threaded rod and nuts. Action wrenches [for flat bottomed receivers like the Mosin Nagant] do fine with 1/2-13 bolts.

Please reply. How did you get a grip on the barrel to twist it? I'm planning on getting the barrel on mine threaded and they wont take a barreled receiver.

There are ~ 300 pounds of torque on the barrel vise bolts.

I clean the barrel and Aluminum collet with alcohol for no oil.

There is powdered sugar on the collet to barrel interface.

I have broken three 1/2-13 number 5 hardened bolts tightening the barrel vise.

I have since converted to 7/8-14 threaded rods with wax , nuts, and washers. These don't break when get the vise tight enough not to slip.

I have since put an ATI scope mount and a VZ59 barrel on the receiver in the video.

I got the barrel and receiver for $5.

There is nothing to restore.

@tnekkc I agree. The barrel vise is the hardest part. I use some aluminum barrel vice jaws from brownells. They work great.
