True. I mean in the sense that the infected people are still rational beings like in the book. Farther in other ways, yes.

Oh my god the look at 5:22 said 'I understand, you can't help us...'. I wish they kept this ending but it would of asked 'So what happens?'
I bet the Alpha would recognise him if Neville went out, and would of let him live, the others would of killed him.

in fact, THIS is the ending which originally shown to test audiences, who rejected it in favor of the ending where he blows up himself (and some zombies) with a grenade, an ending which totally misses the point of the book!
you'd fit right in with those test audiences, you wouldn't know a well written zombie story if it bit you in the face :P

SaneMcK is talking out of his ass and missed the point. This ending is closer to the 1954 book ON WHICH IT'S BASED. the vampires are revealed to be thinking, benevolent creatures who were merely attempting to rescue a vampire that Neville had captured earlier.
the title "I am Legend" comes from Neville's realization that the vampires were the good guys and that he was the monster of their legends, since he had been mindlessly driving stakes through their heart at every opportunity. -cracked

This ending is exactly the example of producers/directors having to appeal to the mass market as opposed to making a good film, the original ending sums up the story far better. The whole point of post apocalyptic films is that they don't end with "end everyone lived happily ever after".

The Book ending.
" Robert neville looked out over the new people of earth. He knew he did not belong to them, he knew that like the vampires, he was anathema and black terror to be destroyed. And abruptly, the concept came, amusing to him even in his pain. A coughing chuckle filled his throat. Full circle, he thought while final lethargy crept into his limbs. Full circle.
