Hello All.

I recently got into a Hardcore Punk band at my college. I'm the vocalist and frontman, so I am shouting for 2 hours every week for practice and then for however long our sets will be.

I am somewhat familiar with how to shout and scream without doing your vocal chords damage. Basically, avoid using the throat and use the diaphragm to produce the sound. Engaging the ab and stomach muscles helps avoid vocal strain.

I probably need to learn more thoroughly than that though. I need to figure out some warm ups and exercises.

My most pressing concern is muscle and lung fatigue during practice. I'm having troubling getting in good full breaths between vocal phrases. Punk moves so fast that I can't find anywhere to sneak it in. Also, my stomach becomes tired very quickly and I'm panting by the middle of practice.

I think practice and targeted aerobic excersice may help my windedness, but most of my other concerns requires some knowledge from those more experienced.

Any Goons who know how to do Punk or Metalcore vocals, please lend me your knowledge. I want to be able to be in this band while also having a voice the next day.

Let me clarify:

I'm not looking for help on sound or tone. I have my own style that I love to use.

However, shouting in this tone is very stressful on the voice. The next day I'm hoarse and strained, though I have done well enough that there is no pain.

There are ways to sing safely; ways that protect the voice from damage and pain. I need to learn some techniques on how to do this.

  • if you wanna have some voice next day, try to change techniques in the songs, there you will not damage yourself too much, also, you will like to drink some hot tea and rest the voice at least 12 hours, and drink a glass of milk every day, it will make you protect your troath. and some people say, if you drink a lot of whisky, your troath will be stronger, but i dont think its really true. oh, and before singin, try to drink some hot tea or a whisky glass and sing clean tone.one song.

  • well, i saw its may be too late, but i will answer you anyway, i use 3 diferent techniques for singing hardcore, for low pitch and volume, and slow parts, i sing with almost nothing of air pushing out, not whispered, but lo pressure of air, and i send the almost to the nose, the other is singing like doing strength exercise,(its the best) and for screaming vocals or short words is open my troath and exale all my air pushing with the stomach, sorry about my shitty inglish im from argentina.
