Our summer family vacation to the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Trail head was just outside Estes Park, elevation started at 8500 feet and climaxed at 10500 feet at Thunder Lake. Trail head was Wild Basin. This was an amazing trip, when completed about 19 miles of round trip hiking, included day hikes plus our push in which was 13.9 miles round trip. Thunder Lake was worth the hard work to get there. 4 children ranging in age from 11 to 1, each with there own pack, or in a pack. Quite a challenge to motivate children but a feat they won't soon forget. People on the trail would look at my family like we were crazy, or maybe they thought I was crazy to take my family into this kind of wilderness, but the rewards will far outweigh what I or anyone else might think. Don't hesitate to do it yourself with your kids.

  • Noticed at 8:40, the little woman is packing heat. What's her poison for the trail?

  • @jb3al That is a glock 23. 13 plus 1. One of us always had it ready to go. We were the only people we met on the trail carrying anything at all, which was a bit of a surprise. Of course most of the hikers we met were not going in to a back country camp to stay overnight. And even though we didn't need it, we did see a good sized black bear the last day of the trip, which was a good reminder of why we brought it along.

  • My wife and took our two year old on five mile jaunt in the Great Smoky Mountains. About halfway through he wanted to be carried and fell asleep before we hit the thee mile point. I got to carry him 1 mile up a mountain then one mile down the other side with him snoring. You are right about the looks you get when your on the trail with a baby. Wouldn't trade it for anything though. He's hooked now and wants to "go hiking on a trail in the mountains" all the time.
