Historical Briefing:

The Peninsular War was a contest between France and the allied powers of Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The war began when French armies invaded Portugal in 1807 and Spain in 1808 and lasted until the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814.

Spain's liberation struggle marked one of the first national wars and the emergence of large-scale guerrillas, from which the English language borrowed the word. The failure of Napoleon's large armies to pacify the people of Spain allowed British and Portuguese armies to secure Portugal and engage French forces on the frontiers while Spanish guerrilleros bled the occupiers.Acting in concert, these regular and irregular allied forces prevented Napoleon's marshals from subduing the rebellious Spanish provinces.

Years of fighting in Spain gradually wore down Napoleon's famous Grande Armée. While the French armies were often victorious in battle, their communications and supplies were severely tested and their units frequently cut off, harassed, or overwhelmed by partisans. The Spanish army, though beaten and driven to the peripheries, could not be stamped out and continued to hound the French remorselessly. In the final years of war, with France gravely weakened following Napoleon's invasion of Russia, a combined allied army under Arthur Wellesley pushed across Spain from Portugal and liberated Madrid. Eventually, the French forces were driven across Spain by the armies of Arthur Wellesley who pursued them across the Pyrenees back into France.

War and revolution against Napoleon's occupation led to the Spanish Constitution of 1812, later a cornerstone of European liberalism. The burden of war destroyed the social and economic fabric of Portugal and Spain and ushered in an era of social turbulence, political instability, and economic stagnation. Devastating civil wars between liberal and absolutist factions, led by officers trained in the Peninsular War, persisted in Iberia until 1850. The cumulative crises and disruptions of invasion, revolution, and restoration led to the independence of many of Spain's American colonies and the independence of Brazil from Portugal.

  • Portuguese army... Was the most brae army... Not saying this cuz I'm portuguese but it is true... Portugal was poor and alas it refused napoleon to make a blockade to britain and france attacked then the british forces came to help us... And the spanish of course used this to once more to claim Portugal so they joined France and still... Portugal won!

  • PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really love this game and I cant play it cause it lags so much :( I have a 9600 nvidia geforce graphics card but a shitty AMD athlon core that came with my computer. What can I do to make this game run faster? Please help!

  • Also, Portugal called for British officers mainly to learn the new infantry organization/tactics. And this is why they hired Beresford and a bunch of other british officers. During the Peninsular campaign portuguese artillery was left with portuguese officers as they were considered on par if not above the british. The same worked for cavalry has the British lacked good cavalry commanders and they had nothing to teach there.

  • Beresford was the portuguese commander. But that doesnt mean by any means that he was the portuguese ruller or that he answered to Wellington who was the British commander. Beresford had its own chain of command under Portugal. For some battles and campaigns he was ordered by Portugal to work along with Wellington but that was it. For instance, by the time of Waterloo, Beresford himself wanted to send his troops to suppport Wellington but he had to beg for it and even then he could not.

  • @jediguardian1 Yes I know... I'm not one of those that hate spain so say these things to make them look like bad people. But the truth is that they made a "pact" with the french that if Portugal was conquered, spain would keep the kingdom of algarve. Thats why I said that spain used this to get portugal again. Not saying everyone but some. Also the north would belong to the princess of Austria? I think or other queen and the central part would be french.
