Well, the true origin lies in the "attach a piece of toast, butter side up, to the back of a cat, the result is antigravity" meme, with the explanation being that cats always land on their feet, toast always lands butter side up, yaddayaddayadda. The original nyan cat had a piece of toast, not a pop tart. I don't know where the pop tart came from...
