Well, High Pressure Sodium lamps are kinda unpredictable. Each one behaves a bit differently from any other.

we have 2 little 50 watt hps OVZ's on our property as we live in the country we bought them from the electric company for like 100 dollars. but we also have quite a few 175 watt mercury vapor yard lights and even a 100 watt mercury vapor flood light, (one that looks like the par bulbs)

LoL and I thought truck-spotting was geeky!

@douro20 the Diffrent Color characteristics of HPS Lamps have to do with Age and the material inside.....the ones turning green also contain mercury and some HPS lamps contain Xenon so they have a white phase while the sodium vaporizes.

@tpirman1982 Actually I got my hands on a few of these fixtures, and I wound putting one of them at the end of my driveway after converting it to 50W... Used a medium base bulb and adapter from mogul to medium and moved the socket back to change the pattern the light is thrown out from the lens..

some of them look a bit like mecury ligthing when they're firing up.

you guys really know your lamps :'(

I see what you mean by unpredictable. My 100W HPS starts out the color produced by a clear incandescent bulb, then goes to a light yellow tint, followed by a momentary bright white, and finally the real bright yellow color.

Some HPS lamps take longer to warm up, hence the greenish glow which occurs as the arc starts heating up the sodium to its melting point.
City I live in is full of those OVZ style lights.. i think they are availible up to 250W

Right. These are the small street lights, they range from 50 to 250-watt lamps.
But in Canton, MA, some range from 35 to 250 watts.

This one seems to be to take the longest time to turn orange.
