Martha in fact talked on the Ed Schwartz program in Chicago once about the matter of her comic career versus her music career. She said she realized she could have enjoyed a major career as a respected jazz, blues and pop singer, but she said she couldn't ignore the bigger opportunities from a film career. She worked steadily, made a lot of money and crowned her film career with brilliant work in the film "Jumbo" with Doris Day and Jimmy Durante.

I saw her when she went on tour with 4-girls-4. She stole the show. I remember her on some variety show in the 60's singing IS THAT ALL THERE IS? the Peggy Lee hit, I'd love to hear Martha sing that again, anyone have it?

Within the business she was considered one of the great jazz singers of all time. No less than Anita O'Day cited her as an inspiration. But her career happened to go in the direction of comedy and she wisely went in that direction with it. She didn't have regrets it went that way.
Martha would be happy to know her antics still make people laugh today. Mark of a true comedian!

@waynebrasler That's what got me into her now, reading in Anita's book of what an inspiration she was to her!
