In the early 20th century, Edward S. Curtis photographed Native Americans across the continent, then printed his landscapes and portraits using the photogravure alternative photographic process. Now watch as Karl Koenig shows you how it is done, using updated and modified tools and techniques

  • I am very pleased to see this topic covered on YouTube! I like the voice over well scripted and spoken. I wish the video were an actual video rather than a series of stills. Would it be possible to cover photogravure in a series of motion videos showing each major step in the process? I was especially looking forward to seeing the inking step and the press in operation.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • Mike,

Karl lives in New Mexico, I live in California. The next time I travel to Albuquerque I will try to coordinate a video session to do as you suggest. As you can see from Karl's comment above, he does believe in his work, so I am confident that he will cooperate if our schedules mesh. Thanks very much for your comment.

  • Tony may be motivated. I have lots of work to show and details about technique to share. I would be happy to do both. Karl

  • Hi Karl: Anything more you can do on photogravure would, hopefully, be appreciated by a lot of people. I know it's a LOT of work to make a video like this, but anything you can provide would be a big help.

  • Mike: as Tony says, we are not located particularly near one another but perhaps we will be able to do as you suggest. He did some movies of me doing the gumoil process. He can tell you how to obtain this if you are interested. Karl

  • One more thing- do you have a website Karl?

  • Hey Karl, I wish you would make a video on the gumoil technique you invented. It looks to be one of the most interesting alternative processes in my opinion- the results I've seen are just beautiful.

  • Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I may be biased. Karl P. Koenig
