If I remember correctly, Macmillan died in 1986. That certainly limited what they could do.

Also, I would love to know exactly what the opening song is. It sounds like a piece Sir Edward Elgar might have written, but I can't find it anywhere. Are there any fellow classical music buffs who could help me?

The Tooth & Claw book sez they stopped making these sketches because kids weren't finding them funny. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor (the Red Dwarf guys) were asked to make the show more "trendy" and straight away the Exchequers and "Herr Wilcox" sketches were dropped
Although Fluck and Law hated making puppets of Rantzen and Norden, they pretty much had to start doing it to make the show more "accessible" to a younger audience
I'm not fond of the first series either. in b4 I get lynched

That's very interesting! It's too bad they were asked to make the show "trendy;" sketches like these were the best part of the series. I mean, a retirement home for ex-PMs. The possibilities are endless, and hilarious. :D
