Everything you wanted to know about that spooky old tunnel (but were afraid to see for yourself)!
Just over 1.4 miles long, the last train passed through it in December 1962. Last week I took a video camera, a pair of floodlights and a power supply, and went for a walk through. End-to-end took 45-minutes, but I've sped most of it up to bring it down to a 15 minute clip with nothing left out apart from a couple of short stops.
Yes I know the video's a bit dark, but it IS a pitch black tunnel after all! I've brightened it up as best I can.
If you want to find the ends on Google Maps, put either of the following in the search box:-
N 51 42.865 W 3 24.634
N 51 43.683 W 3 23.171

  • I went to walk through the tunnel a few weeks ago. Didn't get very far, was not afraid of the dark but of who I might meet in there...

  • @markw031 I carried a 4-cell Maglite, but not just as a torch :)

  • That's fantastic! When I was a lot younger me and my mates used to dare each other to go in there and brag at how far we'd got but none of use ever went all the way through! That old tunnel was legendary!

  • @Decado1978 I went through it when I was 18, to see if I could use it on my way to work experience at United Flexible / Phoenix Flexible Tubes (I forget which they were called then) and save the bus fare. Was "interesting" to see my brilliant white lead-acid powered lamp (actually a pair of old dynamo lamps off a bicycle) starting to dim when I still had a mile of tunnel left to go!

  • Why is there a mourmon chapel there?D:

  • @19Gazz97 God knows. Somewhere to pray in peace and isolation, I suppose.

  • did some people die in a crash there and people have seen ghost or somthing please let me know

  • @NostromoTV Apart from the iron hoops at the start (don't know when those were taken away) and the nice paint job in the "chapel", it's probably not changed since you went there in the 70s. A bit like Rhyl, really.

  • @maskerafilms Thanks for asking, you certainly can! If your film goes on YouTube please post it as a video response.

  • is there anyway i can use some of your footage in an intro ta a short film im making? please let me know.. thanks
