Guru Paduka Stotram - by Adi Shankaracharya

Translated Text of the Stotram is from :
http://www.chinmaya-chicago.org/BV/Guru%20Paduka%20Stotram.pdf
http://www.vmission.org.in/files/pdf/gurupadukastotram.pdf

The crossing of this Endless ocean of samsara is enabled
by the boat that is sincere devotion to Guru
Showing me the way to the valuable dominion of renunciation,
O dear Guru, I bow to thy holy sandals.

Like a full moon for the ocean of the Knowledge,
Like down pour of water to put out the fire of misfortunes,
Removing the various distresses of those who surrender to them,
O dear Gurudev, I bow to thy holy sandals.

Those who prostrate to the blessed padukas of their Guru
become possessors of great wealth
and overcome the curse of their poverty very quickly.
To such padukas my infinite prostrations.

Attracting us to the Lotus-like feet of our Guru,
removing all kinds of desires borne out of ignorance,
fulfilling all the desires of the disciple who bows humbly
To such padukas I humbly offer my obeisance.

Shining like a precious stone adorning the crown of a king
They stand out like a beautiful damsel in a river infested with crocodiles
They raise the devotees to the state of sovereign emperors,
To such padukas I humbly offer my obeisance.

Shining radiantly like the Sun, effacing the endless darkness of the disciples sins,
Like an eagle for the snake like three-fold pains of Samsara
like a conflagration of fire whose heat dries away the
ocean of ignorance
To such supreme padukas of my Gurudev, I humbly surrender.

They endow us with the glorious six qualities like Shama,
They vow to bless the intiated ones with the ability to go into samadhi.
Blessing the devotees with permanent devotion for the feet of Lord Vishnu(Ramaadhava)
To such divine padukas I offer my prayers.

Fulfilling all the wishes of the disciples,
Who are ever-available and dedicated for Sewa,
Awakening the sincere aspirants to the divine state of self realization,
Again and again prostrate to those Padukas of my Poojya Gurudev

They are like an eagle for all the serpants of desires,
Blessing us with the valuable treasure of discrimination and renunciation,
Granting us the knowledge to get instant liberation from the shackles of the life,
My prostrations to those holy Padukas of my Guru.

  • @Puffin9090 Hello, I think it is bhyaam. maybe when its sung, it gets shortend or elongated based on the meter and to synchronize with the rhythm,

  • This is wonderful! Who are singing these chants, and which version is this from? Is this an A.R compilation?

  • very nice singing. Along with these pictures if the photo of Mahaperiyaval Sri Chandrasekara saraswathi swamigal, 68th peetadhipathi of Adhi Sankara's moolaamnaya matam at Kanchipuram, which is also called Kanchi Kamakoti peetam is included, it must have been very nice. This is my humble suggestion. If possible please include atleast now.

  • Nirvana is complete dissolution - like a wave merging back into the Ocean. You lose your small "I" (i.e. "I am Mr./Ms. So-and-so) and gain the Infinite "I" of God. Just as a wave is never separate from the ocean - it rises from the ocean, lives in the ocean, and finally subsides into the ocean - similarly, you are never entirely separate from God. Nirvana is when you realize this non-separatedness, and merge back into your original identity: God.

  • @newgirlalfa: Good question! The answer is: No. "Heaven" is a place where you go to get rewarded for good deeds. But Hindus argue that finite causes can only have finite effects. Since human life and all human actions are finite, their result can never last for an infinite time. Hence the Hindu idea of Heaven (called Svarga) is something like being born on a different plane of existence, enjoying all the comforts you can imagine, living happily for a very very long time - but NOT forever!

  • scientifically coming to light all these....read books about quantum physics u will realise what is it talking about...read one soul many lives, one life several masters etcbooks if u could ...The purpose of life and the full science behind it..What is God in scientific terms.....

  • Not at all.itz being the God Himself or attaining it..the full..the perfect..the Brahma...There is no concept of Heaven in Hinduism where God after creation sits, nor it talks about the world we reach if we done this and that...good or bad,,,In Hinduism there is only karma and result of it...

  • @kudz13 I think "bhyaam" is correct.Paadukaabhyaam means "to the two sandals".

In Sanskrit, there is a seperate Grammatical number form for Dual(Dviteeya) as English has a form for Singular and Plural) . "Paadukaa" (a feminine noun) when its "declined" it becomes "Paadukaabhyaam" in dual number in the 3,4,5 cases(Vibhakthis).

I hope I did not confuse too much.

Correct me if I am wrong

    Thanks for uploading

  • @newgirlalfa In Indian religion, heaven is the place one goes after death to enjoy the results of virtuous acts one has done. Heaven is the place of only enjoyment, when the results exhausts, he will have to come back to earth as man. Same is for Hell with wicked acts. But our religion says, a perfected human goes to Bramha loka ( Nirvana in Budhism, Salvation in English ) from where one will not come back and in this place one will be as capable as lord himself.

  • The final quote: "I am faced with my beloved (Krishna) and my Guru, to whom do I bow first? I bow to my Guru who took me to my beloved"..this is a Meera Bhajan..not from Kabir.....very beautiful

  • salute to ved gyni, guru paduka, guru astank racheta shree adi shankaracharya
