''Deposta dunque ogni cattiveria, ogni inganno,
ipocrisia, invidia e ogni maldicenza,
come bimbi appena nati
bramate il latte genuino della Parola,
per crescere con esso verso la salvezza,
se davvero avete già gustato
come è buono il Signore.'' (1Pietro 2:1-3)

''Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.''
(1Pe 2:1-3)(AV)

O Sanctissima

O Sanctissima, O Piissima
Dulcis Virgo Maria
Mater amata, Intemerata
Ora, ora pro nobis

[O most holy, o most godly,
dear virgin Mary
beloved mother, undefiled
pray, pray for us.]

Tua gàudia et suspìria
iuvent nos, o Marìa!
In Te speramus, ad Te clamamus
Ora, ora, pro nobis

O santissima, o piissima,
Madre nostra, Maria!
Tu, preservata immacolata,
prega, prega per i figli tuoi.

Tu confortaci, tu difendici,
Madre nostra, Maria!
Con te chiediamo, con te speriamo:
prega, prega per i figli tuoi.

A most lovely Catholic hymn, first published in Latin around the year 1794. The tune is believed to be a traditional ''Sicilian'' melody.

The original Latin text is a tribute to Mary's state of purity and grace and asks her to pray for us.
It has also been made into a Christmas carol. A good example is the German "O du fröhliche" commonly performed at Christmas.
