This whole conflict has nothing to do with religion. It's about economic interests and zones of influence. Russia wants Assad in power because he is their ally and they have a naval-base in Syria that they don't want to loose. Then there is the US and Israel who want someone in power who is friendly with them and not to Russia or Iran. And then there is Iran, who want an Ally close to Israel and the Mediterranean sea. Religion is just dragged in to recruit soldiers and make them fight harder.
