A super quick guide for the people who want to record the cheapest way and still get okay quality (fine for recording demos). For great quality, you gotta spend some cash!
---------------------------------------------
Getting this to work on Vista & 7 was trickier than XP. I'm afraid if I do a tutorial for that, it won't work for most people.

Do you not have Windows XP? Create a 2nd partition on your harddrive and install XP on there, or find a helpful tutorial elsewhere that involves Vista or 7.

The adapter shown on step 3 is measured as 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch. You can find them at most music stores. http://www.americanmusical.com/ProductImages/Large/p22014.jpg

The 1/8 inch to 1/8 inch cable that connects the amp to the pc looks like this.

Don't Save As MP3.
MP3 is compressed and sounds like crap. WAV is best.

After step #8, you should hear the guitar coming from the pc speakers.

On Audacity, if the drop-down bar is grey (unusable), you need to update your audio driver (Realtek, VIA, or etc.). Usually to get the best compatible driver, you need to go to your pc motherboard brand's website, search the motherboard name, and download / install the audio driver.

If Stereo Mix isn't in the bar, use Line In (or Microphone if on a laptop).

What is the difference between Stereo Mix and Line In?
Stereo Mix records every sound you can hear through the speakers. Line In records only what you plug in. Microphone is the crap version of Line In.

When recording, if you're getting 1 sound bar (mono sound) instead of 2 bars (stereo sound), go up to the 'Edit' tab, click 'Preferences' in the list. Under 'Recording' set channels to "2 (Stereo)". There ya go.

  • I did this, and it ruined my Fender Mustang I amplifier. After i unplugged everything the speaker was not working.

  • @umbraguitarist Maybe you shouldn't have unplugged everything. No plugs, no power.

  • great shirt!!! I have it too, and I also like your Marshall Halfstack.

  • @theJudgementstrike Thanks man! I use that Marshall halfstack for recording just like this. I used it in my song called 'Jobless'. Check that out :)
