(July 7)Rant all you want in a public park. A police officer generally won't eject you for your remarks alone, however unpopular or provocative. Say it on the Internet, and you'll find that free speech and other constitutional rights are anything but guaranteed.Service providers aren't required to police content, but they aren't prohibited from doing so.Take this image from Dutch photographer Maarten Dors. Yahoo deleted the photo from its Flickr site on grounds it violated an unwritten ban on depicting children smoking. Dors eventually convinced Yahoo that _ far from promoting smoking _ the photo had value as a statement on poverty and street life in Romania. In Dors' case, the law is fully with Yahoo. The company's terms of service - similar to those of other service providers - gives Yahoo "sole discretion to pre-screen, refuse or remove any content." Yahoo and other companies say they must craft and enforce guidelines that go beyond legal requirements to protect their brands and foster safe, enjoyable communities. But as Internet companies consolidate and users spend more time using vendor-controlled platforms, the community's power to demand free speech and other rights is likely to diminish. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)

  • "I may not always agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -- Voltaire

Chip away at one freedom, you begin to lose them all. Political correctness and antismoking hysteria-extremism have gone too far. No one condones children smoking... but to ban the image just because you don't like it is no better than Hitler burning books.

  • @mbt777 lol okay

  • @stevostevie Yeah...and that's so cool, right. It won't be cool years away when you're dragging around an oxygen tank. It won't be cool, when you smell so bad because your insides are rotting away from cancer because you thought it was so cool to have a cancer stick hanging out of your face. You're the "big shit" huh? It IS a "big deal" Mr. Stevostevie! It's a huge deal to your health and the rest of those around you having to breathe in your disgusting smoke because you can't control yourself.
