Tribute to American League slugger Gus Zernial at the Oakland Coliseum. Gus was one of the most feared sluggers in the 1950's. In 1951 he led the league in home runs, runs batted in, extra base hits and assists. He was the the first Major Leaguer to hit four home runs in the month of October in the regular season.
God bless you Gus and thanks for the Phila A's memories you gave to me. I was NOT one of the people who boo'd you that day you charged a line drive and it hit and broke your collar bone. I am sure that your lats Phila. manager 94 year old Eddie Joost wishes you well too. Rest in peace big guy !

Going to miss you very much, Gus. This world is a sadder place without you for sure. Thanks for all your positive input to the world and for the many years of friendship.
Love you, buddy.

Zernial had one of the more memorable -- not to mention just plain weird -- trading cards in the early 50s when he was with the Philadelphia Athletics. It's a shot of him holding a bat with six balls attached to it somehow. To top it off, Gus is giving the OK sign and wearing a pink undershirt.
From what I understand, he was one of the better power hitters in the AL before his habit of sacrificing his body to make plays in the outfield took its toll.
