Silent Night, composed by Franz Gruber, as arranged for seven violas by Matthew Greenbaum and performed live at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York City by violists Stephanie Griffin, Jessica Meyer, Jen Herman, David Wallace, Ji Hyun Son, Gillian Gallagher and William Hakim on Sunday, December 18, 2011. This was an "encore" after the same seven violists played Stephanie Griffin's arrangement of Indonesian composer Tony Prabowo's Doa Persembunyian (A Prayer for Refuge, 2002) on Stephanie's solo recital as part of the Argento Performer Series. You can hear these violists play Prabowo's piece on youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-4gXt4dn9o
The legend about "Silent Night" is that the organ at St. Nicholas' Church in Oberndorf was damaged by flooding on Dec. 24th, 1818, so Father Joseph Mohr and choirmaster Franz Gruber came up with Silent Night at the last minute, a new carol that would work with Father Joe's guitar as the instrumental accompaniment. Imagine how overjoyed Father Joe and Choirmaster Gruber would be to hear these seven exquisite violas playing their song! This is absolutely lovely.
