Ode for St. Cecilia's Day (libretto by John Lockemann)
William Boyce

Part 7. Air: "The hero whom a fair one fires"

The hero whom a fair one fires,
Untaught to yield,
Hastes to the field:
'Midst fiercest foes
Intrepid goes;
He charges, and the host retires.
Whilst round he whirls his fatal spear,
The drum's hoarse voice, the cannon's roar,
Are glorious music to his ear;
For soon the foe will life implore.
