Rudyard Kipling's great poem "Gunga Din" gave the Hollywood writing duo of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur a chance to romanticize the Indian water-bearer in a galloping adventure that sent British troops against a gang of Thugees (worshippers of the Goddess Kali). If you've seen the movie, you'll know the scenes by heart. Oddly, when the same two writers later tried to peddle "The Front Page," to Hollywood barons, they were at first turned down on the basis that it was just a rewrite and relocation of "Gunga Din." Eventually, though, it went to film and was another blockbuster. Music is Ravi Shankar giving us some traditional Afghani sitar music.
