This version was recorded by Altan, on their album Horse with a Heart. It's hauntingly beautiful.

One morning in springtime as day was a-dawning
Bright Phoebus had risen from over the lea
I spied a fair maiden as homeward she wandered
From herding her flocks on the hills of Glenshee

I stood in amazement, says I, "Pretty fair maid
If you will come down to St. John's Town with me
There's ne'er been a lady set foot in my castle
There's ne'er been a lady dressed grander than thee"

A coach and six horses to go at your bidding
And all men that speak shall say "ma'am unto thee
Fine servants to serve you and go at your bidding
I'll make you my bride, my sweet lass of Glenshee

"Oh what do I care for your castles and coaches?
And what do I care for your gay grandeury?
I'd rather be home at my cot, at my spinning
Or herding my flocks on the hills of Glenshee"

"Away with such nonsense and get up beside me
E'er summer comes on my sweet bride you will be
And then in my arms I will gently caress thee"
'Twas then she consented, I took her with me

Seven years have rolled on since we were united
There's many's a change, but there's no change on me
And my love, she's as fair as that morn on the mountain
When I plucked me a wild rose on the hills of Glenshee

  • Beautiful song!!!

  • @russbear31 The Scottish themselves are descendants of the Irish...

  • Thank you for posting this. --Beautiful tune. I am tracing my family's genealogy. My family was from Glenshee (Clan MacThomas), which is in Scotland and not Ireland. This is actually Scottish Celtic music, and it's associated with our clan. There is also another version of it called "The Shepard of Glenshee."

  • @insidethefall78 well I was looking for something as relaxing as this song, doesn't really has to be Irish folk

  • @altonormz Hmm I'm sorry but I'm not too familiar with the genre to actually know a band who solely creates what I call "haunting ballads" You can try Clannad, but I'm not actually familiar with all of their stuff. I can recommend some good mellow albums (some with female vocals) outside of the genre (gothic, shoegaze, metal, non-irish folk) does it matter?

  • @insidethefall78 I heard it, but I want to have a full album of songs similar to this (dosen't has to be Altan)

  • @altonormz When I bought an album with this on it, I was expecting songs mostly in this vain but in truth most of Altan's stuff I've heard were upbeat jigs and reels. The song that comes closest is "The Flower of Magherally" which is an amazing ballad - put this at the end of youtube's address watch?v=2UqpR2mH940

  • @insidethefall78 can u recommend on more songs like this?

I heard the rest of this album wasn't so good

  • @altonormz Irish Folk

  • what knd Genre is it?
