Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I just watched your video lessons on Reggae and I was wondering if you could help me with explaining Ska Rhythm. I've read a lot of stuff about it, but it seems information conflicts between people when it comes to this style. I always enjoy your clear explanations and I hope you have the time to make a Ska Lesson.
Thanks tons,
- Randall, Akron, OH.

A: Ska is the basic Reggae rhythm pattern. Most people aren't aware that Ska was a vibrant pre-reggae Jamaican music that appeared in the early 1960's! Also, the feel of Ska is integral to all the Jamaican styles that succeeded it making it the backbone of Jamaican Reggae to this day. The Ska is generally played by guitar and piano in unison. And, to fully understand the feel, you will have to play it.

  • cool.

    Thank for sharing.

Your a great player, teacher and person I am sure

  • Andrew, You're the best! I have played this beat, or one like it, by palm muting the strings between beats and accenting the up-stroke sharply. In any event that was my take on Reggae as best I could play it. This video on Ska helps me go to the next level.

    Thanks for your help!

  • thats monkey man at the start.... right? also i find it easer to get the timing by playing the chords as an upstroke, it also makes the strum pattern a little easier

  • "New Version of You" by Reel Big Fish sounds exactly like that riff he's playing.

  • @boblawblaws604 Wow... How is that comment a troll comment? You're a fucking idiot...

  • @PsychedelicWarfare

What kind of FUCKED comment is, "uhhh What" - your a Fuckin' Idiot Fuckin' Troll.

  • @charleysax

I just went and watched that, "claredowling" video... + You've GOT to be Fuckin' kidding me. Some stupid FAT chick in her apartment & you're questioning a fucking G.I.T. Grad. over HER!

Are you FUCKED in the head?

Wasson has been a pro session musician for 20+ years, he's a Fucking G.I.T. Honors Grad. & Wasson Played in 4 Prof. Caribbean bands! Um, HELLO... I'm inclined to believe Wasson over a FAT UGLY DUMB-ASS chick who can't even keep a decent fuckin beat. Wise up shit-head.

  • uhhhh..... what?

  • This is a little confusing! There's a video by claredowling that specifies to play all chords as upstrokes. Left hand has to leave the fretboard to deaden the notes.

  • looks like a faster reggae. very nice.

  • You are a true scholar, Andrew. You have your anthropologist hat on in this one!

  • i never knew how awesome ska can be until i saw this video! i feel like implementing this stuff in my playing now. thanks! lol
