The classic 1983 #1 smash hit, as received in analog C-Quam AM Stereo... in Japan... via nighttime skywave in the Tokyo area, roughly 500 miles away from Sapporo. The audio quality is among the best I've ever heard from analog AM radio, thanks in large part to an excellent wideband receiver, very quiet band conditions, and the Orban Optimod-AM 9100 audio processor being used by HBC Radio to its maximum extent: 12.5 kHz audio bandwidth with stereo enhancement added (above and beyond the amount naturally provided by the matrix processing used by AM Stereo).

  • Why the UK never went with AM stereo is beyond me. This is as good as 128kb DAB apart from the atmospheric interference - what lovely processing.

  • I'll bet that AM Stereo is alive and well in the Land of the Rising Sun!

  • Better than mine!

  • I can hear a little bit of hiss, but not bad!

  • @bearboydave Yes ditto to that. They even said at the time in 1990 that Japan was not happy with the performance or some such nonsense...well over 20 years later it is still going strong !

I think at least 2CA in Oz is still in am stereo on 1053

  • When was this recorded? It sounds fantastic.

  • awesome stalker song :) love AM stereo

  • Well-done!

  • @bratina501 During the War, KOMA out of Oklahoma City could routinely be heard in Viet Nam. The alleged lesser coverage of CQUAM AM Stereo is mostly a myth based on the fact a left or right only signal cannot amplitude modulate the carrier to 100%. As for the "softer" sound, that was mostly likely caused by AM Stereo stations using less compression. That wasn't required by CQUAM, but why if you're broadcasting in AM Stereo wouldn't you also want high fidelity as well?

  • This station really sounds near FM quality and in stereo. I wish my Radiosophy HD-100 had AM stereo. Add a equalizer to this and it sounds almost like a 128 kbps mp3. I cannot wait to try this with my surround sound receiver later on.

  • @vwestlife One does still exist but on a new server now, I need to find the url but it is there, I logged in myself a few weeks back
