Julia Bradbury goes in search of the perfect beach and is disappointed at the commercialism of The Beach. She instead goes swimming with sea gypsies of Koh Phi Phi and discovers there are still some unspoilt experiences out there.
Ali has always been the village leader, but after a loss in the family took a back seat. i spend 2/3months with these people and have for 9 years. Before the tsunami hit, the gypsies had already began to get to higher ground, so no fatalities. For almost 8 months they were given no help to repair the boats they depended on, as the odd visit from show offs usually only resulted in a tshirt and a cup of water. Our friends in the next village had their huts destroyed and replaced by a hotel
it's easy to shake people if that's what you want to do. tourists all stay in the same places. when i was in s.e. asia i found myself on this small island for a week and everyday i was either alone on the beach or at most sharing it with like 8 people, tops.
He said grampa said when the sea behaves strangely to go up.
I still can't get over how many people ignored hours of obvious signs a tsunami was headed their way. It's really hard to balance unnecessary deaths and ignorance.
I have personally read about the tides receding before a tsunami when I was in grade school. Hope this helps them prepare for the next one and hopefully save most of their lives.
I did charity work with the" sea gypsies", these people use to own all the islands but in the last 20 years, large hotels and corporations have basically stolen all their land. They can't fight back for the land, because when they lost it, many of them didn't have Thai passports/citizenship so they can't fight their case. I met the currently leader, the one you see in the video is now retired and his son Ali now is village leader.
Main Koh Phi Phi Ley beach is polluted and messy with garbage. The beaches on Koh Phi Phi Ley that are not on main can be nice if you get a sandy one. Koh Phi Phi Don, where the film was done is too crowded to be a nice beach, you can bath or swim, there are no hotels here so you cant stay the night. HOwever once dinner time hits, they all go home. You can camp out here with a special word of mouth group and its nice to see it empty. However cleaner and quieter places in Thailand.
THE BEST BEACH I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IS IN BRAZIL, ILHA GRANDE, LOPES MENDES BEACH. IT HAS THE WHITEST SAND, AND NO TOURISTS. AT LEAST NOT IN 2007.

I knew locals had to know about signs of tsunami.
