If you are interested in this unusual plant, the Amorphophallus titanum (Corpse Flower) , you can read more and see more about it at: http://www.bbg.org/vis2/2006/titan/info/atbbg.htmlIt grows very fast just before blooming - doubling in size in ten days - and then, because it needs to attract a certain fly that usually feeds on carrion for its fertilization, the bloom smells like rotting flesh for about 8 hours. Nice, eh? Anyway, it was a big event here...made it into the local news and the NY Times, etc. The Garden's cultivator decided to call it "Baby".
@TheEmarbe - Not sure anymore about the source. It's was cut and pasted from an article somewhere about the bloom in Veracruz.
40 years does seem a stretch!
Kew Gardens website: "This species has proved very difficult to cultivate, and there are only a handful of places in the world that do so. Even under optimum conditions the plant takes about six years to flower from seed"

Likely, 40 years is all wrong. Thank you!

This week in Rio Blanco, Veracruz, the worlds largest flower bloomed after 40 years of dormancy. This is the natural cycle of the Amorphophallus Titanum. This unique flower, originally from Indonesia, blooms for a short three to five days and even then, only once every 40 years. To attract the insects that will perform the important task of pollen exchange, this gorgeous flower gives off the scent of rotting meat, earning it the apt nickname Flor Cadavérica Flower of Death.
